Chicago's Best Date Wine Bars & Lounges 2017

BY TAYLOR WADE

A wine bar is a great date environment to unwind, relax, and enjoy conversation. Chicago is full of swanky wine bars and lounges, and we've picked the absolute best in terms of type of crowd, atmosphere, and drink menu.

WEBSTER'S WINE BAR | LOGAN SQUARE

Webster's is one of Chicago's oldest wine bars. Recently shutting down its Lincoln Park location to open up in Logan Square, it features tastings and events perfect for a date night. Events include 2nd Story, a hybrid storytelling series that incorporates music and true tales from local writers. For an extra fee, purchase a wine flight of four selections meant to complement each story. Time Out Chicago says, "We’ve missed many a movie because we stopped by this funky wine bar across the street from Webster Place theater for a pre-show cocktail. When tasting pours are this affordable (and interesting), we pretend it’s for educational purposes and stay all night, soaking up the dark, Bohemian vibe and munching on tasty cheese plates. We’ll catch the movie on Netflix."

PUMP ROOM AT PUBLIC CHICAGO

Housed in the PUBLIC Chicago Hotel, The Pump Room is an upscale farm-to-table restaurant by day and transforms into a supper club at night recapturing the glamour of the 30’s and 40’s with a modern twist. Offerings include late night tapas style small plates; local, domestic and international draught and bottled beer; exotic, specialty cocktails by their own mixologist, and great music.

THE LIBRARY AT PUBLIC CHICAGO

Located in the same PUBLIC Chicago Hotel is The Library. Reminiscent of 1950’s American and European coffee houses, The Library's coffee bar offers La Colombe's wide variety of exotic coffees, including coffee drinks from around the world and a special blend just for PUBLIC. By night, the room transforms into a sexy lounge and wine bar offering a full bar, domestic and international bottled beer, a great international selection of wines, and specialty cocktails. What makes The Library one of my favorite go-to places is the enormous, custom limestone fireplace you can enjoy anytime of day.

D.O.C. WINE BAR

D.O.C. is a cozy wine bar with high ceilings that give it some kind of urban barnyard feel. The bottle selection is excellent and you won’t find even the slightest whiff of pretension, despite the mostly yuppie clientele. Don’t be shy about asking your bartender for a wine recommendation to pair with a butcher’s platter, wooden cutting boards filled with a mix-and match selection of bruschetta, meats and cheeses.

WINE BAR AT THE WALNUT ROOM

The beautiful historic Walnut Room has been a Chicago tradition since 1907. Located on the 7th floor of Macy’s on State Street, the Walnut Room is the first restaurant ever opened in a department store. The wine bar added to the decades-old Walnut Room in 2007 is really just a corner of the dining area, and it’s only open when the restaurant is (read: to align with ladies who lunch, not ladies who Red Bull and vodka). But it’s a nice spot for a midday or after-work drink, full of the restaurant’s characteristic dark wood and formal-yet-friendly service. Nicer still is the wine list, which has a staggering number of bottles under $30 and more than 20 wines by the glass.
